Fred Wilpon and baseball ops

I tend to look at things through the prism of baseball. I enjoy the game, the people and the stories; the extraneous stuff that sometimes pops up does not interest me.

So when I read Fred Wilpon’s critical comments in today’s New Yorker magazine (see previous post), my mind turned immediately of their effect on the team’s baseball operations. The three stars Wilpon criticized — Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and David Wright — are all trade candidates for the Mets this summer. Reyes and Beltran in particular are likely to be gone before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

So why would the owner of the team come out and disparage those three players, calling Wright “not a superstar,” referring to Beltran “sixty-five to seventy percent of what he was” and saying that Reyes “had everything wrong with him”?

Now, shred general managers can flaunt those comments in front of the Mets when they look to extract value from their stars this summer. That premium package for Reyes may lose some of its luster in light of the team’s self-deprecation. The Mets may have just given other clubs reason to lower their offers for Beltran, as well. And what about Wright, who remains under contract for two more seasons? Will he be as willing to stick around long-term?

Judge Wilpon as a person if you must. More damaging to the Mets may be the effects of his comments on the team.

Why would anyone be interested in buying the Mets at this moment? Their value is dropping daily. Poor Freddie had to underhandedly borrow $25 mil last winter from his slimmy Bud, Selig. Did the Mets end up with Sandy Alderson because Poor Freddie picked him or was he forced on them as part of the deal so Alderson could keep an eye on MLB’s monetary interest in the Mets. The last several years Alderson has been the Mets only good hire, so I find it somewhat hard to believe this was Foolish Fred’s choice. How much of the Madoff mess did Wilpon disclose at this meeting? Probably not much! Which would mean he isn’t in very good standing at the moment with his good Bud, Selig not to mention all the bad publicity for MLB.
The Mets player payroll this year is north of $120 mil. MLB teams only pay the ballplayers during the 6 month season. So the Mets owe the players approx. $20 million a month or $5 million a week. This doesn’t take into account other Met personnel salaries or the loan payments on Taxpayer Field. I believe I read, but can’t verify, that the totals amount to approx. $11 million a week the Mets owe. This doesn’t take into account revenue from ticket sales, concessions, parking etc.
The Mets have already collected all season ticket holder money and pre-game sales & the income associated with concessions and parking of games already played .
In my opinion Met fans can speed up Poor Freddie’s departure by not buying anymore tickets. Those who have already purchased future tickets if you must go take the # 7 train, bus or walk. Don’t pay to park and don’t purchase anything when you are there. Squeeze Poor Fred just like he’s squeezing us.
Also if Met fans want new ownership we need to cut off his revenue source, OUR MONEY!!. He will lose money faster, become cash poor quicker and the Mets value will continue to plummet daily. This will force him to sell low sometime this summer to new ownership. New ownership can take this savings even if it’s only 10 million & pump it into worthy free agents this winter. Wilpon will use any money he can get from us or new minority partners this summer to pay his Madoff bill.
In other words, Met fans will be contributing to Poor Freddie’s defense fund & poor Met teams in the near future.
If you must go sing to Poor Freddie, something along the lines of “Good bye Freddie”. I’ll join you from my living room watching a couple of the Met prospects they somehow in spite of themselves, have come up with. I refuse to give my money to a S**tty owner!!

Surprising and deeply troubling to learn of the relationship between MLB Advanced Media and Glenn Beck’s GBTV. Think twice before you subscribe or renew your subscription to . Mr. Beck and his GBTV is not just any network. It is a heinous, hateful and noxious entreprise – bad for America. Especially in light of MLB’s connection with what has been long described as the American pasttime, MLB should dissolve its relationship with Mr. Beck right now – before it further darkens the image of and Major League Baseball generally.

Commenting a month and a half later naturally it’s easy to see Wilpon’s ignorance and lack of leadership skills. Some may say “look how the Mets have turned it around soince then” but I’d rather give the credit to Collins and Reyes, and Beltran. I refuse to focus on the slow spinning turnstyles and want top see owners put winners on the field. A Mets fan since 67, I’ve seen way too many blunders come from the owners suite. To publicly denounce what stars you may have, leaves a negative affect on the rest of the team not to mention those identified. Reyes, Beltran, and Wright are the reasons we go to the game. Get rid of them, and you are telling us to stay home.

I could not resist commenting. Perfectly
