Duquette honored at BBWAA dinner

Check out this speech from former Mets general manager Jim Duquette and his daughter, Lindsay. The Duquettes won the Milton and Arthur Richman “You Gotta Have Heart” award at this year’s Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s annual New York chapter awards dinner, months after Jim Duquette donated a kidney to his daughter.

You can read more about the dinner here and here.

Frank Viola back as Class A pitching coach

The Savannah Sand Gnats officially announced today that Frank Viola will return as their pitching coach. Viola remains one of a host of former Mets on the organizational payroll, including Triple-A manager Wally Backman and Major League third-base coach Tim Teufel.

“I’m excited to be back in Savannah,” Viola said in a statement. “There were a lot of positives last year and there will be a lot more positives this year with the new incoming kids. It will be great being around John [Katz], Luis, Joel, Tom [Truedson] and Griff [Jason Griffin] for another year and being able to help out everyone involved.”

Projecting the Opening Day roster, 1/8

Before you read another word, note that this is an exercise in futility: we will only consider players who are currently under team control, even though the Mets are likely to add at least one starting pitcher, reliever and perhaps outfielder before Opening Day. But with less than five weeks to go until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, it’s all we’ve got. Check back next week to see how this roster changes:

C : John Buck
1B: Ike Davis
2B: Daniel Murphy
SS: Ruben Tejada
3B: David Wright
