Mets 3, Cardinals 2: Three Up, Three Down

Crazy game. Crazy garbage wind tornado.

Three Up
1. Jon Niese:
Really nice start by Niese, who wasn’t as flashy as Michael Wacha but was a whole lot more efficient. He’s quietly been the Mets’ best starter since returning from the disabled list.

2. Travis d’Arnaud: In addition to reaching base three times, d’Arnaud saved the game for the Mets with his swipe tag on Matt Carpenter at the plate. A tough tag, and a good one.

3. Lucas Duda: The offense needed thump, and Duda provided it. The way this lineup is going, any home run is good enough for an “Up” right now.

Three Down
1. David Wright: Another 0-for-4 and three more strikeouts. As hot as Wright was earlier this month, he’s suddenly just as cold.

2. Kyle Farnsworth: Though Farnsworth ultimately earned the save, he needed Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Ruben Tejada and d’Arnaud to bail him out with perfect execution on a relay. Farnsworth gave up as many hits (three) as he recorded outs.

3. Carlos Torres: IfI were managing, I would have kept Daisuke Matsuzaka in for at least the eighth inning, and maybe the ninth. As it was, Terry Collins turned to Torres, who struggled with two hits in 2/3 innings.
