What we learned: Rookie fifth-starter candidates Rafael Montero (above, on mound) and Jacob deGrom may be legit. Those two combined for four scoreless innings against the Nationals with six strikeouts in their spring debuts. … Jon Niese may have set himself up for his recent bout with shoulder soreness due to focusing too fully on strengthening his rotator cuff — and not the surrounding muscles — this winter.

Mets to play two nationally televised Spring Training games

ESPN just released its Spring Training broadcast schedule. You can view the Mets:

  • Tues., March 26 vs. Cardinals, 1 p.m.
  • Thurs., March 28 @ Nationals, 1 p.m.

Only 12 days left until pitchers and catchers officially report to Port St. Lucie, Fla.

A rare night game at Digital Domain Park offered a potential glimpse of the future, pitting Matt Harvey against Nationals uber-prospect Bryce Harper. Harper won their lone battle of the evening, drawing a walk.

The big news of the day was that a federal judge decided not to dismiss trustee Irving Picard’s case against the Mets, ensuring that the two sides will go to trial on March 19.
