Marlins 4, Mets 3: Three Up, Three Down

The bullpen has sprung some leaks.

marlinspark

Three Up
1. Jon Niese:
Over his last four starts, Jon Niese holds a 1.01 ERA. When he walked off the mound Monday night, Niese ranked seventh in baseball in ERA — not bad for a pitcher sporting major injury concerns heading into the season.

2. Kyle Farnsworth: Nice work by Farnsworth to escape an eighth-inning jam of Daisuke Matsuzaka’s making. If he could regularly pitch this well in save situations, the Mets might be onto something.

3. Curtis Granderson: Suddenly, no Mets hitter is hotter than Granderson, who is 8-for-20 with two home runs over a six-game hitting streak. The Mets hope only that this lasts.

Three Down
1. Daisuke Matsuzaka: In a way, Terry Collins may have been less offended had Matsuzaka simply opened the eighth inning by giving up three straight homers. At least that would mean he was throwing the ball over the plate.

2. Scott Rice: Have to retire lefties. Can’t not retire lefties.

3. Omar Quintanilla: Had Quintanilla caught Casey McGehee’s hot shot right at him in the eighth, the Mets would have had a real chance to win regardless of their bullpen hiccups. Alas, Quintanilla did not.
