Mets 5, Dodgers 3: Three Up, Three Down

Every once in a while, the Mets win.

citifield5-22

Three Up
Jon Niese:
Outside of a blip in his previous outing, Niese has done nothing but give the Mets quality innings. The left-handed delivered seven more of them in Thursday’s win, even adding an RBI double off Zack Greinke.

Eric Campbell: So apparently Soup can play outfield, too. His catch to rob Hanley Ramirez in the eighth inning very well might have saved the Mets the game.

Curtis Granderson: Maybe he’s heating up, maybe he’s not. We’ve seen false starts before from Granderson, but it’s hard to argue with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in four plate appearances.

Three Down
Daniel Murphy:
An 0-for-4 at the plate and a fielding error on defense was what Murphy contributed to this one. Not his best night.

Wilmer Flores: Robbed in the second inning, Flores did go on to single and score. But he also struck out twice on a night when the rest of his teammates avoided bad outcomes at the plate.

Lucas Duda: Hitless! So you get a down. But props on the stolen base from the big fella.

Dispatches from Port St. Lucie, 3/24

The countdown to Opening Day is down to six.

catchersgear

What we learned: A lot, actually. Jon Niese felt no pain after his first bullpen session since undergoing an MRI on his left shoulder. Kyle Farnsworth will re-sign with the Mets. Matt Harvey will headquarter his rehab in New York, not Florida. Dillon Gee will pitch Opening Day. And the Mets have hired an assistant hitting coach.

What we wrote:

Around the league:

They said it:

“It’s a big honor obviously for them to trust me with that day and give that to me. I’m very thankful for that opportunity.” –Gee on his Opening Day start
